Students chose from a variety of interactive workshops designed to expand horizons and sharpen skills. Most workshops are small and stress interactive, experiential learning. Workshops are challenging, but not overwhelming, and may require occasional out of class preparation. Enthusiastic professional teachers and artisans make learning meaningful, exciting, and fun.
Student health, safety, and security are our primary concerns. UCLA and Georgetown have been chosen for their safe suburban locations, excellent campus security, and traditional collegiate atmosphere. All campuses feature a major university medical center and hospital complex with specialists available 24 hours a day. Jr Discovery staff accompany students to all medical facilities.
All Discovery campuses feature a fully operational office in our residence hall for parents to call or email 7 days a week. Residences are equipped with high-speed internet access on most campuses and you are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop computer. You are required to bring a cell phone on all programs.
Meeting people and making friends is easy. On each campus, all students and staff live in one university residence. This "one residence, one community" concept fosters greater safety and sociability.
Roommates are assigned after you complete a detailed Personal Profile in the spring. (Mutual roommate requests are honored.)
Bring a guitar if you’d like, or your sketch book or journal, a baseball glove, lacrosse stick, and your computer. But most importantly, come with an open mind. You will meet new people from all over the world and enjoy a diverse and fascinating group of friends. Last summer, students attended from 43 U.S. states and over 60 countries.
Your tuition includes more than just classes, room, and board. Extracurricular activities and trips are provided every day, evening, and weekend at no additional charge. All Discovery campuses are superbly located near world-class cultural, entertainment, and recreational attractions.
UCLA and Georgetown feature some of the world's best facilities for practice, tournaments, and pick-up play. Whether it is running around the track, shooting some hoops, swimming some laps, or climbing the stair master, the choice is yours.
Jr. Discovery students are part of a dynamic teenage/middle school community, living and learning with peers from all over the USA and the world. Mutual respect and acceptance of other cultures, different ethnic backgrounds, and religions are important parts of the Jr. Discovery experience. Students must respect the feelings, rights and property of others, attend all workshops and required group meetings, activities and excursions. Students are responsible for the general upkeep and cleanliness of residence hall rooms and adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by Jr. Discovery.
Bring comfortable clothes, a notebook, and your unique personality. Suggested clothing and accessory lists are mailed in the spring. Books and classroom supplies (if needed) can be purchased at the University bookstore.
