Why UCLA?

The beautiful communities of Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, Westwood and Santa Monica surround UCLA’s magnificent suburban campus. The diverse cultural and learning environment of UCLA provides opportunities to make friends from all over the world. This welcoming environment, combined with UCLA’s remarkable educational resources, reputation for academic distinction, athletic excellence, spirited student body, and superb location, create an ideal setting for Jr. Discovery.

The University of California, Los Angeles

The 411-acre campus has over 60% of its land devoted to lush green fields, tropical trees, flowers and plants. UCLA is one of the USA’s finest college campuses, academically, culturally, architecturally and recreationally. UCLA offers a six-million volume library, numerous cultural centers and museums, one of the nation’s finest health care complexes, and some of the world’s finest athletic facilities - many built for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Noted alumni include athletic superstars, political figures, Nobel Prize winners, actors, and musicians.

We’ll Live and Learn Together

An important social and educational component of Jr. Discovery is living and learning with others. Our dorm is not only a place to sleep and live, but where you will interact with others from other parts of the country and the world, developing deep and long lasting friendships. Our experienced team of Resident Counselors are available to you around-the-clock to ensure a smooth transition from home to campus living.

One Residence Hall, One Community

All Jr. Discovery students and staff live together under one roof in Hedrick Summit Suites. Having one distinct “home” on campus provides numerous social, educational, and safety benefits.

The Hedrick Courtyard

Students live in Hedrick Summit Courtyard Residence Hall, adjacent to the UCLA Sunset Canyon Pool Complex. Rooms are 10, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 person suites, comprised of singles, doubles, and triples. Each room features beds and study desks, ample closet space, telephones, (refrigerator rentals are available). In-house facilities include a computer center with laser printers, television/DVD lounges, hi-speed internet, game room with ping pong and billiards, laundry room (lessons available). There is also a hotel style front desk and Jr. Discovery Program office.

Food For Thought

Jr. Discovery students eat in the modern Hedrick dining hall, and receive 3 meals a day (2 on weekends) while on campus. Included daily is a choice of nutritious entrees, low-fat and vegetarian selections (sushi on Thursdays), hot breakfast, salad bar, deli bar, pizza oven, fresh fruit, beverages, and a wide selection of desserts and frozen yogurt, with unlimited portions.

Health, Safety, and Security

  • The health, safety and security of each student is our primary concern.
  • Doctor appointments are arranged with the UCLA Children’s Health Center or Peak Health Medical Group.
  • For 24 hour/emergency care, students are taken to the renowned UCLA Medical Center, one of the finest health care complexes in the world.
  • Jr. Discovery staff make all medical appointments, transport and accompany students to medical facilities, obtain prescription medications and notify parents after medical visits.
  • Jr. Discovery and UCLA housing staff are on duty on and off campus 24 hours a day.
  • Resident counselors live in the same secure residence hall with Jr. Discovery students.
  • For additional safety, there are daily/nightly sign-ins and room checks.
  • In keeping with a collegiate atmosphere, students are permitted to walk on campus and in our “home area” of Westwood Village, but are required to be in small groups.

Transportation

  • Jr./Summer Discovery maintains a fleet of passenger vans for class field trips, small excursions and medical transport. For large group excursions chartered buses with professional drivers are used.
  • Jr./Summer Discovery is pleased to offer assistance in facilitating transportation via car, bus, train or plane. Summer Discovery provides escorted transfers to/from Los Angeles International Airport for $40 each way. Staff meet incoming flights in baggage claim (or outside of customs for international flights) and assist with departures. All plane arrangements are made through Musiker Travel, our own travel agency, at the lowest available fares.
  • If you are being driven to Los Angeles, detailed driving directions are sent approximately one month prior to the program.
